Stellenrust was established in 1928 and has ever since made some of the most superb quality wines that the Stellenbosch region from South Africa can offer. It consists of about 250 hectares of planted vineyards with vines ranging from 4 years up to 36 years of age. Production of wine started from a small milk shed which was transformed into a boutique cellar about 80 years ago. At that time, only 200 bottles were produced of a single cultivar Pinotage wine, shortly after Dr Perold nursed the Pinotage vine from Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. Today, Stellenrust is blossoming with a wide range of white and red wines including Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinotage, Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. About 5 years ago, we decided to start a new venture in the South African wine industry – Stellenrust gave people the opportunity to stomp their own grapes and make their own wine. This lead to the production of the JJ Handmade wines using no machinery and only the free running juice through gravity flow of which total production reaches about 150 cases. Recently, Stellenrust was also black economic empowered, empowering 72 black people on the farm as majority share holders in the vineyards on a part of the estate. The people drawing advantage from this BEE project pick and tread their own grapes in large tanks in order to produce their own wine – stomped from their feet. Heritage is added to the wines through beads that is hung around the bottle necks. These beads are woven by the people on the farm themselves and each is believed to bring everlasting good fortune. Today Stellenrust boasts with one of the finest and most modern tasting facilities combining Cape Dutch, Art Deco and African styles all in one – a must to see and a must to experience.
